One of the more challenging aspects of Access Consciousness™ is to communicate the existence of consciousness beyond thinking and beyond our brain.
“If you’re thinking, you’re stinking,” “Your mind is a terrible thing, waste it,” and “Your mind can only define the limitations of what you already know” are all attempts to make us perceive the universe of consciousness beyond what we have defined it as. Getting us to comprehend this is like trying to get a fish to comprehend that there exists beyond its watery world a universe that is not wet.
Now a demonstration of the correctness of this awareness has come from an unlikely source, in the form of a book by Dr. Eben Alexander, a neurosurgeon for 25 years and the son of a neurosurgeon, a man of science with experience teaching at Harvard Medical School and other top universities.
Alexander did not believe in the phenomenon of near death experiences, and he always believed there were “good scientific explanations” for the experiences described by those who narrowly escaped death.
Then he had one of his own. While he acknowledges that he is “far from the first person to have discovered evidence that consciousness exists beyond the body,” Alexander believes he may be the first to have experienced while his cerebral cortex, the personality and thinking aspect of the brain, was not just compromised but completely shut down, while also being under minute medical observation for the duration of his 7 day coma.
He describes his cortex function as having been “simply off,” rather than limited, compromised, or malfunctioning as has been the case in other reported near-death experiences. This non-functional, rather than dysfunctional, aspect of his brain caused by the severity and duration of the meningitis he suffered was documented both by CT scans and by neurological examinations. In medical terms it was, “global cortical involvement,” meaning total shut down of his brain.
“According to current medical understanding of the brain and the mind, there is absolutely no way that I could have experienced even a dim and limited consciousness during my time in the coma,” says Alexander.
Alexander had woken early one morning with an extreme headache caused by a very rare form of meningitis, usually found in newborns, in which E. coli bacteria was literally eating his brain. As Alexander describes it, his chances of survival in anything but a vegetative state were “near non-existent.” Seven days later, when doctors were weighing the option of discontinuing treatment, his eyes popped open.
In his new book, Proof of Heaven, and an article about it in the October 15, 2012 issue of Newsweek magazine, Alexander describes an experience of Heaven that has much in common with consciousness beyond thought as Access Consciousness™ Founder and best-selling author Gary Douglas has been attempting to communicate for 25 years.
Alexander describes a place of intense awareness beyond thought, where the beings he encountered had such joy that if they did not express it they would not be able to contain it.
He experienced oneness in a way he had never perceived possible. “It seemed that you could not look at or listen to anything in this world without becoming a part of it—without joining with it in some mysterious way…I would suggest you couldn’t look at anything in that world at all, for the word ‘at’ itself implies a separation that did not exist there. Everything was distinct, yet everything was also a part of everything else, like the rich and intermingled designs on a Persian carpet or a butterfly’s wing.”
Alexander also describes communicating telepathically beyond thought and with exquisite intensity with beings he encountered in this state of pure consciousness.
He received three messages which are remarkably similar to what Gary has been saying to us for years, “You are loved and cherished, dearly, forever,” “You have nothing to fear,” and “There is nothing you can do wrong.”
How often has Gary reminded us that fear is not real and done everything he can to stop us from going to the wrongness of us?
Love is a distractor implant because it is an ideal we torture ourselves into seeking endlessly with incredibly little chance of actually finding or achieving it. The unconditional love Alexander describes is not something usually experienced on earth, to say the least. While love is most often seen as a distractor implant in Access Consciousness™, loving is not. Does not the first message Alexander received communicate that experience of loving oneself, and would there be a difference between that and total allowance?
Alexander acknowledges how bizarre these experiences appear to those living in the scientific world he inhabited and still inhabits. “Had someone—even a doctor—told me a story like this in the old days, I would have been quite certain they were under the spell of some delusion…what happened to me was, far from being delusional, as real or more real than any other event in my life. That includes my wedding day and the birth of my two sons.
“Though we seem to live in a world of separation and difference, physics tells us that beneath the surface, every object and event in the universe is completely woven up with every other object and event. There is no true separation,” Alexander continues.
“Before my experience these ideas were abstractions. Today they are realities. Not only is the universe defined by unity, it is also—I now know—defined by love. The universe as I experienced it in my coma is…the same one that both Einstein and Jesus were speaking of in their different ways.”
He continues, “I know that many of my peers hold—as I myself did—to the theory that the brain, and in particular the cortex, generates consciousness and we live in a universe devoid of any kind of emotion, much less the unconditional love that I now know God and the universe have toward us. But that belief, the theory, now lies broken at our feet. What happened to me destroyed it.”
As Gary has so often said, Access Consciousness™ discovers things, then years later, science catches up. In this case, it’s the scientist.
Gary Douglas has been exploring consciousness and means of achieving more of it for more than 25 years. He shares what he has learned in seminars worldwide as well as in at least 7 published books. Information about all of these is available at his website, www.accessconsciousness.com.
