For the longest time structures have been in place that segregate and isolate people and children who do not fit in, who are different. These structures are meant to include everyone and yet regularly so many people slip through the cracks. What’s been lost by this is greater than what we’ve ever been willing to acknowledge; the whispers of future possibilities that can be created so differently from how we currently operate. What can we be and do different (differently is more of the same, different is something entirely new) to include the awareness and knowing of everyone including those who have fallen through the cracks?
“What can we be and do different (differently is more of the same, different is something entirely new) to include the awareness and knowing of everyone including those who have fallen through the cracks?”
For many of us, what the visionaries, creators and catalysts for change bring into the world is so inspiring yet can seem out of our reach. For those who are misfits, marginalized, or labeled disabled, autistic or X-Men it goes far beyond this; but these are titles that merely encapsulate an aspect of a being, not the totality of what is available in each of us.
What we call X-Men are children that are referred to as disabled or having special needs that come into the world with what’s labeled as ADD, ADHD, OCD and Autism. Gary Douglas and Dr. Dain Heer, the co-founders of Access Consciousness, re-reference this point of view, calling them not special needs children, but special talents children or X-Men. The term comes from a group of comic book, movie, TV and video game superheroes. They are mutants, outsiders; with superhuman abilities. Humans are intensely fearful and distrustful of them, and want to find a cure to make them more human. The X-Men are actually a superior breed. However, we keep functioning from the point of view that there is something wrong with them because they don’t learn the way we do. The simple reality is, that they learn in a totally different manner. What if we find out how they learn, rather than trying to teach them using our methods.
Access Different Possibilities With Bars At School desires to create a new system of education, where no one falls through the cracks. Where each child is acknowledged for who they are, for their talents and capacities and interests, and also for their unique way of learning, and receiving and perceiving information. This invites them to explore everything they’re capable of being and creating in not only their own lives, but the world. When all the barriers are down and we are willing to acknowledge the capacities and talents in each of us, that’s when we can become leaders of our own lives.
“When all the barriers are down and we are willing to acknowledge the capacities and talents in each of us, that’s when we can become leaders of our own lives.”
Some of the most magnificent creators in the world have been those who fall through the cracks, labeled misfits, crazy and disabled. But were they actually showing us a whole new way of creating through a lens of infinite possibilities, that always looks different than we expect but includes everyone and the planet in ways we cannot even fathom?
